Quantum Climbing Beta!
Quantum Climbing is dedicated to maintaining and refreshing at least 40 unique boulder problems, and 30+ roped climbing routes (coming soon) at any given time. Come back to this page often to see what each section of wall looks like, how many routes are available, and what level of difficulty each section might give you... you will also be able to log your sends, and even share your feedback on the quality and grade of the route. (That part is under construction)

The Fine Structure Constant (represented by the Greek letter "alpha") is a pure, dimensionless number that measures the strength of the electromagnetic force holding electrons and protons together inside atoms. ~1/137. Although it appears repeatedly in physics at the quantum level, physicists do not completely understand why. But we do know that without this precise ratio (most precisely calculated at .007297352564311) , the fabric of physical reality would disintegrate, and our physical world would not exist!

B: Beta Wall
(Quantum Superposition)
Beta is the symbol in quantum physics often used to indicate the probability of one state of superposition of quantum particles (not the other one!). They are distinctive, but exist simultaneously until measured or observed. Similar to the way you may see a solution to a problem in your mind, then, when executing your intended solution, you find yourself solving the problem in a completely different position!

C: Speed of Light Wall
(Constant - 299,792,458 m/s)
The Speed of Light is a fundamental constant of the universe, represented as "c" in mathematical formulas (such as E=mc²) and is observed at precisely 299,792,458 meters per second. Strangely though, no matter how fast you are going, and no matter which direction, light will ALWAYS be observed at this speed in relation to you, or anyone else. As with so many principles in physics, we can explain how it works, but we still don't know why!

In the quantum world, particles like electrons don't spread out like standard waves of energy; they can sometimes interact at a highly precise, exact points. (i.e. sometimes a wave, sometimes a particle!) Physicists use the Dirac DELTA function as a mathematical "probe" that allows physicists to mathematically "filter out" everything else and calculate the exact state or probability of a particle at one hyper-specific location. You could consider your climbing shoes a DELTA tool for planning your own hyper-specific position on a climb, and finding a solution to the problem!

E: Electron Wall
(Pure Elementary Charge)
The Elementary charge is the smallest fundamental unit of electrical charge in the quantum world of sub-atomic particles. It has been precisely measured at 1.602176634 x 10^-19 Coulombs. VERY small. And it has a perfect, proportional relationship with the Fine Structure Constant (Alpha wall!) Together, their relationship is the reason our physical world stays intact, instead of dissolving into a sea of useless particles. Without this relationship, we wouldn't have a wall to climbing on!

F: Fundamental Forces Wall
(Hint - There are 4 of them!)
Four fundamental forces provide order to our infinite universe, and they have been individual worked-out amongst physicists throughout the world since Isaac Newton first conceived Gravity as an unseen force. Now we know that Gravity, Electromagnetism, and the Strong and Weak Nuclear Forces work together, in ways we don't always completely understand, to make our way of life, and our very existence, exactly what it is! Every one of these forces is at work when you are trying to send your latest project!

G: Gravity Wall
(Fundamental but non-unified)
Gravity is strange. By comparison to the other forces, it is measurably weak, and gets significantly weaker with distance. And yet, learning to harness gravity in the same way mankind learned to harness fire, then steam, then electricity, would change the world in ways we can't imagine. We would do this by uniting the other forces - Quantum Mechanics - with Gravity, creating what physicists dream of: Quantum Gravity! Who knows, maybe the right route will help inspire you to unlock Quantum Gravity some day. But you won't know unless you keep climbing!

S: The Spray Wall
(Spin, Entropy, and Action!)
Physics is profound and complex, and "S" has multi-faceted uses in the mathematical formulas of Quantum particle "Spin" as well as a primary variable of Entropy in thermodynamics (Converting energy into mechanical work!) AND as a principle of "least action" in Lagrangian Mechanics. They may all sound complex, but in the end, you are involved in every one of these uses when your on the Quantum Spray Wall! You convert your own energy into physical work, the atoms in your body maintain the necessary spin/quantum action to keep you stable, and you instinctively choose the path of least resistance every time you climb! Turns out your a natural physicist!
The Quantum Spray Wall is here for your own creative exploration! Think of it as the climbing equivalent of an early, unorganized universe with no apparent structure, but unlimited possibilities! This wall will be changing as much, or more, than any wall in the gym! It is a dynamic, ever-evolving element of unplanned and unexpected form... and perhaps a bit of chaos.

M: Moonboard Wall
(Orbital Dynamics)
The moon is the only place in the infinite universe where mankind has stood outside of our own atmosphere on Earth. One could feel a bit confined, maybe even claustrophobic, when trying to contemplate how small and limited we really are. But here are some fun facts about our Moon that will take your mind away from that thought for a minute:
-The sun is 400 times wider than the moon, but 400 times further away, which is why the moon is able to create a perfect solar eclipse.
-The Moon is only 1.2% the mass of the Earth (just over 1/100th!) and yet gravity is just about 1/6th of Earth. Why are they not proportional?
-You can study this on your own, while you work on your next project in 9.8m/s^2
The Moonboard is a standardized training wall from the United Kingdom that has almost 40,000 established route combinations, and ratings from V4 and up! This wall is challenging, but don't get discouraged. Give it a try - even if you can only do a couple of moves, or just hold on for a few seconds, you're testing your strength and ability, and that is a good thing!
Eventually, LEDs will be installed that can illuminate any of the thousands of possibilities at every level. In the mean time, we hope you enjoy the challenge (or at least, the view of the moon and the stars).

Stay tuned for a deep dive into Quantum Mechanics and Relativity when both silos are completed, and our roped climbing opens to the public!
